The Bush Administration had established whats called the Mexican truck pilot project which was cancelled last year by Congress under the Obama Administration. Hence, out of frustration, Mexican trade authorities have imposed tariffs on U.S. pork, ketchup, cheese and some fruits until President Obama re-initiates a program which enables Mexican trucks into the U.S.
There will be a 5 percent levy on certain cuts of pork and 25 percent on white cheese. Onions, apples, pears, oranges, cherries and mineral water will also be subject to the new tariffs. In all, the Mexican tariffs on U.S. products are at a grand total of 99. They were at only 89 last year.
Barack Obama has noted that the government does intend to establish a similar program however it is obviously taking longer than expected.
